Routine Car Maintenance

The New Year is here, so why not get 2023 underway by giving your car a quick once-over to ensure that everything is still working properly? January is a month where we’re all getting started with our resolutions and looking forward to the year ahead. It’s also a good time to take stock of where we’re at personally, and if there’s anything we want to add or strip out of our lives. That general mood makes it a great time to take a detailed look at your car and see if it’s going to last the distance. If so great, if not then we’ve always got bargains in our online car auctions.

We know how important your personal transport is here at RAW2K, so to help you make sure your vehicle doesn’t end up on one of our online vehicle auctions, we’ve put together a list of a few essential areas on your vehicle that you can check yourself to make sure you’re up and running for the New Year.

Fill up your fluids

Whether it’s coolant, screen wash, or clutch fluid, all of these fluids need to be topped up to their recommended levels. If you’re unsure on how to do this or you’re not 100% on where to locate your fluid caps, check out your owner’s manual for guidance. Some of these fluids are slightly less vital than others (screen wash is arguably not as important as brake fluid), however they still need to be topped up whenever they run dry!

Change your engine oil

If you don’t think you’ve changed your engine oil in a while, then it’s best to do so as soon as possible. When replacing your engine oil, be sure to remember to replace the oil filter as well. What’s more, if you’re unsure on how much oil your car has left in its tank, you can always use the dipstick to check. Changing the oil in your vehicle is quite a tricky task, so if you feel you don’t have the professional experience or know how to perform it, then we’d recommend you leave this job to someone who has.

Wheels and tyres

Correctly aligned wheels with the proper tyre depth of tread make all the difference when it comes to vehicle safety, so this also a key element worth checking. Generally speaking, it’s best to inspect your tyres on a regular basis for any faults. To begin, ensure that all your wheel nuts are in place, including the locking wheel nut key. From there, examine your tyres for any bulges, cracks or irregularities in the shape or structure.

Finally, it’s time to check that all-important tread depth. The law states that they have to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across at least three-quarters of the tread, around the whole circumference of the tyre. How can you check this? Well, there’s actually a really neat trick you can use - place a 20p coin into the grooves of the treads. If the outer rim of the coin is visible then the depth is too low, which means your tyres need replacing.

So, those are just a few of the things you can do to ensure that your vehicle is ready for the roads in 2023. However, if you feel that your vehicle his too far gone and not worth saving, why not consider listing it on one of our online vehicle auctions?
